October 28, 2020 | The Military in American Politics: The Election and What Comes After

The United States military prides itself on being an apolitical institution dedicated to the preservation of national security. Its apolitical pretensions are increasingly difficult to maintain, however, as candidates for President court endorsements from veterans, servicemembers are increasingly (politically) active on social media, and extreme polarization and fears of post-election unrest have journalists and others asking military leaders whether they will play a role in securing the country after November 3rd.

Our inaugural conference, Peace and Security During Uncertain Times, occured October 5th-9th, 2020 and featured a variety of expert panels and discussion on topics ranging from weapons proliferation, climate change and conflict, and global health. January 27, 2020 | Career Talk

Robyn Wheeler, an alumnus of the Graduate School of Public and international Affairs (GSPIA) and Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Willis Towers Watson, provided a career talk over breakfast. She then followed up with one on one private career coaching sessions. 

October 29, 2019 | Fall Career Panel

WIIS University of Pittsburgh hosted an expert panel of women working in international peace and security. The panel was open to all disciplines and academic backgrounds, and was designed to expose students to diverse careers in the field and allow them to engage directly with our experts. The panel included Ms. Tracy Rice (FBI), and WIIS University of Pittsburgh cofounders Professor Julia Santucci and Dr. Karin Warner.

October 22, 2019 | Dr. Mia Bloom

On October 22nd, the WIIS University of Pittsburgh chapter cohosted terrorism expert Dr. Mia Bloom. Dr. Bloom discussed her research on women, children, and terrorism, as well as her work as a female academic, opportunities for mentorship, and advice for women beginning careers in international security.
